Good little pets for kids

  

Have your children asked you for a pet, maybe a dog or a cat? You may have walked into the pet store just to look around, and the kids are spying on the cute little hamster and asking to take it home. There are a few small pets out there that are great pets for kids. If your child has never had a pet before, a small pet can be a great introduction to a world of care and responsibility. Here are a few examples of small animals that can make great pets for children.


Fancy Rats - Rats really get a bad rap, but they are actually wonderful pets. Unlike hamsters, which are far more popular, rats will spend more of the day awake so you are not kept at night. They are very playful, social and smart. It is best to get them in pairs (same sex) as they are such social animals. They are very easy to handle, very gentle and you can even teach them to do simple tricks.

Guinea pigs - Guinea pigs are good pets. They are fairly easy to tame, they enjoy being handled and rarely bite. They are also social, so you may want a couple (same sex). If one chooses only one, it needs a cage that is at least 18 "X 18", but if you wanted to go bigger, they would definitely enjoy it.

Fish - They may seem boring, but they are actually a good starting animal for children. Believe it or not, fish can actually be trained, you can search for fishing training kits online. Fish can also be quite inexpensive depending on the setup you want. Your setup also determines the number and type of fish you can get. An easy fish to start with is a Betta as you only need a small fish dish for one fish.

It may be a good idea to research with your children before deciding which small pet to bring home. By showing them all the responsibilities attached to the particular pet they may be interested in, they can be better prepared for what awaits.
